Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko was accused today of having displayed an anti-Semitic attitude in a speech he made reporting the United Nations handling of the Middle East crisis.
The Soviet Foreign Minister, according to the report of his speech published in Izvestia, official Soviet organ, said that “Israel would have liked to convert our honorable assembly into a small town bazaar.” To a Russian audience, in the context of the history of Russian Jewry and in the Russian parlance, this remark would be the equivalent of accusing the Israelis of having tried to make the General Assembly an East Side street market.
