Dr. Walter Conrad, Deputy Mayor of West Berlin, who was condemned last week by his fellow councilmen for refusing to grant a license to a Jewish pharmacist, resigned today from membership in the council and from leadership of the Free Democratic Party.
For the moment at least, this ends the public career of the first German official in many years to be called to account for open sabotage of indemnification to Jews or other victims of the Nazis. Dr. Conrad, as head of the city’s Health Department not only discriminated against the Jewish pharmacist, but lied about the case in a report to the council.
Meanwhile, Carl-Hubert Schwennicke, chairman of the FDP in Berlin told the party’s executive today that the party had “so sympathy” with Dr. Conrad’s attitude, The Conrad case had aroused considerable interest in Berlin and thousands of Berliners had protested Dr. Conrad’s action.
