The Nazi authorities in Rumania have appointed a number of Jews as food controllers, thus serving the double purpose of profiting from the Jews’ knowledge of languages and exposing them to the hatred of the peasants from whom food is requisitioned, it was reported here today by Rumanian circles.
The danger inherent in this situation is incalculable, these circles said, when the food scarcity, already acute, reaches the starvation stage. The Jewish food administrators are not permitted to refuse the jobs and are virtually drafted with the alternative of internment and hard labor.
