Anti-Semitic agitation in Hungary has assumed such alarming proportions that the democratic newspaper Magyar Nemzet today issued its second warning within a period of a few weeks citing the consequences to the country as a whole if the anti-Jewish incitement is not curbed.
The main slogan of the anti-Semitic propagandists is: “The deported Jews have all been repatriated, but nobody cares for the pure-blood Hungarian prisoner-of-war in Russia!”
Of the five major political parties represented in the Provisional Assembly, three are conducting anti-Jewish propaganda. The Peasant Party, which openly denounces the Jews and asks that their rights be restricted, is leading the drive. M. Darvas, a leader of the party, has delivered many anti-Jewish speeches, which were greeted with enthusiastic applause by his audiences.
The only two groups which are firmly pro-Jewish are the Democratic Party which represents mainly the Jews of Budapest and a small part of the Hungarian intelligensia, and the Social Democratic Party. The Communist Party is unconsciously helping the anti-Jewish propagandists by consistently accusing the Jews of sympathising with the capitalists.
