An anti-Semitic member of Parliament, discovered to be the son of a rabbi, has been sentenced by a Budapest court to six months’ imprisonment for twelve times forging birth documents.
The defendant, who goes under the name of Kenyeres-Kaufmann, produced a document from Rabbi Kaufmann of Rumania declaring that the accused was an adopted son of Christian descent. The statement was regarded, however, as a father’s desperate move to save his son from a jail term.
The deputy’s real name, it was stated in court, is Jacob Moses Kaufmann. He worked for several years as an agitator for anti-Semitic organizations and was elected to Parliament on a platform urging “racial protection.”
The defense was expected to appeal the sentence.
