An anti-Semitic demonstration here yesterday marred the inauguration of Sir Bernard Waley-Cohen as London’s new Lord Mayor, and four men were arrested by police as a result of the demonstration.
As Sir Bernard’s gilded official coach entered the Law Court for the oath-taking ceremony, placards with the slogan “We don’t want a Jewish Lord Mayo” were displayed by a group of men representing the neo-fascist British National Party. Some of the men chanted the slogan, while others booed and tossed firecrackers into the roadway.
Sir Bernard is vice-president of the United Synagogue, the overall organization of Jewish Ashkenazic congregations here, and a leading member of the Board of Guardians.
