Jewish leaders here view with alarm the results of the recent elections in Austria, pointing out that while not a single Jew was elected to the National Council, several well-known anti-Semites won seats.
Anticipating that as a result of this development the position of anti-Jewish officials in the civil service will be strengthened, leaders of the Vienna Jewish Community today indicated to a correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that under these new circumstances it is doubtful whether Jewish refugees from Austria will seek repatriation. The results of the elections, these leaders said, made even the surviving Jews in Austria more determined to emigrate.
Most of the Jews voted for the Socialist Party. Among the anti-Semites elected to the National Council are: Leopold Kunschak, vice-mayor of Vienna, who only a few weeks ago delivered anti-Jewish addresses publicly; State Secretary Julius Raab, who is a former leader of the Heimwher, Austria’s pre-Hitler fascist army; Dr. Krease, president of the League for Trade and Commerce, and a number of others whose anti-Jewish records are well known.
