HIGH POLITICAL LEADERS IN AN INTERVIEW WITH DER WEG, YIDDISH NEWSPAPER, DECLARED FLATLY THAT ANTI-SEMITIC MEASURES RECENTLY INTRODUCED INTO PARLIAMENT HAVE NOT THE SLIGHTEST CHANCE OF ADOPTION.

AMONG THOSE SUBSCRIBING TO THIS DECLARATION WERE DEPUTY ALFONSO SANCHEZ GARCIA, PRESIDENT OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COMMITTEE, AND MAYAS NAVARRA, UNOFFICIAL PRIVATE SECRETARY TO PRESIDENT CARDENAS AND A LEADER OF THE NATIONAL REVOLUTIONARY PARTY.

“JEWS,” SAID SENOR NAVARRA, “HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR FROM THIS CAMPAIGN, WHICH PLAYED OUT POLITICIANS WITHOUT INFLUENCE ARE CONDUCTING AGAINST THEM. WE KNOW WHAT JEWS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED FOR MEXICAN INDUSTRY.”

NAVARRA RECOMMENDED TO DEPUTY GARCIA APPOINTMENT OF A COMMISSION TO DETERMINE WHO IS BEHIND THE CURRENT ANTI-SEMITIC AGITATION, DECLARING “I AM NOT SURE THAT ALL THIS AGITATION DOES NOT EMANATE FROM FOREIGN FASCISTS.” DEPUTY GARCIA POINTED OUT THAT SUCH SUSPICION EXISTS AND THAT CERTAIN LEFTIST GROUPS IN PARLIAMENT ARE ALREADY CONDUCTING INVESTIGATIONS ALONG THAT LINE.

IT WAS ALSO MADE CLEAR IN THE COURSE OF THE INTERVIEW THAT ANTI-SEMITIC GROUPS ARE BEGINNING TO LOSE INFLUENCE IN PARLIAMENT, WITH EVEN THE PROPONENTS OF THE RECENTLY-INTRODUCED RESTRICTIVE MEASURES DROPPING THEIR SUPPORT OF THEM WHEN THEY BECAME CONVINCED THAT THEY HAD BEEN TRICKED BY AGITATORS WHOSE SOLE INTEREST WAS TO SPREAD ANTI-SEMITISM IN MEXICO.

DEPUTY GARCIA DECLARED THAT IF THE MEASURES SHOULD BE REVIVED IN PARLIAMENT, THEY WOULD BE CHANGED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO BE DIRECTED AGAINST ALL FOREIGNERS, WHICH HE SAID, WOULD BE THE SUREST GUARANTY OF THEIR DEFEAT.

BEARING OUT THIS STATEMENT, AGITATION HERE HAS TAKEN A NOTICEABLE SWING TO A GENERAL ANTI-ALIEN DRIVE. THIS HAS BROUGHT VOLUBLE PROTESTS FROM ANTI-SEMITIC NEWSPAPERS, WHICH DECLARE A DRIVE AGAINST ALL FOREIGNERS WAS NOT WHAT THEY HAD BEEN SEEKING. THE NEWSPAPER EXCELSIOR PROTESTS AGAINST A SERIES OF ANTI-ALIEN BILLS BROUGHT IN BY DEPUTY FALCON, WHICH HAVE ALREADY REACHED COMMITTEE.

AMONG THE FALCON MEASURES ARE THESE: 1) TO ASSIGN SPECIAL TERRITORIES FOR NEW IMMIGRANTS, TO BE OCCUPIED DURING THE FIRST FIVE YEARS OF THEIR STAY IN MEXICO AND TO RESTRICT OCCUPATIONS IN WHICH THEY MAY ENGAGE; 2) TO INVESTIGATE ANTECEDENTS OF EVERY PERSON APPLYING FOR CITIZENSHIP; 3) TO CHANGE THE NATURALIZATION LAWS TO REQUIRE TEN YEARS’ RESIDENCE INSTEAD OF FIVE FOR CITIZENSHIP; 4) TO CHANGE THE LABOR LAWS TO MAKE EMPLOYMENT OF 90 PERCENT NATIVE MEXICANS OBLIGATORY FOR ALL COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL ENTERPRISES.
