Jerry Cavanagh, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for Governor of Michigan in next Tuesday’s primary, is drawing some unwelcome support from people who say they won’t vote for Democrat Sander Levin because he is a Jew. Both seek the nomination to oppose Gov. William G. Milliken in the fall. Levin is a former State Senator and former chairman of the Michigan Democratic Committee.
Cavanagh has been publicly ignoring the anti-Semitic remarks against Levin while attacking the remarks in private to staff members and newsmen. Most of the support has been in the form of small donations.
There also are three Jewish candidates for Congress. They are Kathleen Straus, president of the Detroit chapter of the American Jewish Committee, and Joseph Levin, son of the late federal Judge Theodore Levin, both Democrats; and A.J. Goldenthal, unopposed on the GOP ticket. Joseph Levin and Sander Levin are cousins. Many other Jews are seeking judgeships and state government posts.
