Anti-Semitism is one of the gravest problems facing the Rumanian Government, Petre Constantinescu-Iasi, Rumanian Minister of Information, told a press conference here today.

In response to a question concerning a Jewish Telegraphic Agency report from Bucharest that Ion Mihalache, vice-president of the Peasant Party, had warned Jews against “hunting for political posts to which they were not entitled” while reminding them that anti-Semitism in Rumania was now stronger than ever, Constantinescu-Iasi said that if the report proved to be true proceedings might be brought against Mihalache, and if convicted he faced five years imprisonment. He pointed out that a number of similar prison terms had been imposed upon students found guilty of inciting racial hatred and disorder.

He declared that the government was determined to prosecute such people despite the possibility of its being accused of attempting to rid itself of political opponents.
