Appeal for Mercy for Jew Sentenced to Death; Arabs Wound British Constable

Many appeals were made to the authorities today in behalf of Eziekiel Altman, 23-year-old ghaffir, sentenced to death by a military court for firing on an Arab truck and killing a child. Davar, Hebrew laborite daily, asked editorially for mercy “because he is a member of a people exposed for two years to the wildest terror.” Agudist Chief Rabbi Joseph Dushinsky intervened with the authorities for a reprieve.

Five Jews interned in the Acre concentration camp, including Eri Jabotinsky, son of Vladimir Jabotinsky, and Moshe Ginsburg, were released today.

A British constable was slightly wounded when an Arab band attacked a police patrol near the village of Ikrit in the Acre district. The Lydda airport, which was several months ago seriously damaged by fire set by Arabs, was heavily fired on. Guards repelled the attack, with no casualties reported.

Feb. 28 has been set for the appeal from the Haifa Criminal assizes court sentence of death passed Jan. 28 on Mordechai Schwartz, a Jewish constable, convicted of fatally shooting an Arab policeman.

George Issa Katimy, an American citizen here on a visit, was released yesterday on $250 bail after being held since Jan. 16 on suspicion of Being implicated in a Jerusalem bombing. Katimy is a Christian Arab.

Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency, left this morning for London with Mrs. Edgar Dugdale, niece of the late Lord Balfour.
