Appeal Moves Toward Climax on All Fronts

Upon staunch defense of the principles of American government rests the best method of checking anti-Semitism here, declared Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver of Cleveland at a dinner last night at Beth Israel Community Center, 88-01 102nd-street, Richmond Hill, L. I., in honor of Sol Cohen, Queens Jewish leader.

The dinner marked the launching of the Richmond Hill drive for the United Jewish Appeal to help German Jewry. Proceeds of the function went to the campaign.

SILVER URGES ENDLESS FIGHT

Other speakers included Morris Rothenberg, co-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, and Rabbi A. H. Neulander, who president, A musical program was presented.

“The best method of checking anti-Semitism in this country is through fighting incessantly, strenuously, relentlessly each man in his sphere of influence, for the basic principles upon which our American government stands,” Rabbi Silver declared.

The campaign of the Rockaways division of the United Jewish Appeal was launched Saturday night with a dinner at the Jewish Center, 1295 Central avenue, Far Rockaway. Guest of honor was Rabbi Silver. Other speakers included Mrs. Roger W. Straus and John L. Liebowitz, who heads the drive.

3-WEEK TOTAL $415,000

The sum of $113,000 was raised by the United Jewish Appeal for German Jewish relief during the past week, bringing the three-week total to $415,000, according to an announcement yesterday by I. Edwin Goldwasser, Nathan Straus Jr., and Ira M. Younker, co-chairmen of the drive to fill New York’s quota of $1,200,000 in the national $3,000,000 campaign.

The women’s division headed by Mrs. Roger W. Straus, has raised $75,000 of the amount thus far obtained.

ZWEIG PLEADS FOR CHILDREN

An appeal by Stefan Zweig, German-Jewish author, for help for the Jewish children of Germany, the worst sufferers from Nazi persecution, was made public yesterday through the United Jewish Appeal. Zweig declared:

“Many of the children who are growing up now in Germany must, I fear, become embittered and bitter, infected by the hatred which incomprehensible injustice will arouse in them. It must be our ambition our duty to see that the new Jewish generation rises superior to the present in strength and ethical feeling that it should not grow up as a hating people a people of vengeance, but will be a people of understanding, carrying further our historic mission of being the mediator between all nations, the warrior against all war and all hatred.”

GARDEN PARTY WEDNESDAY

More than 200 women are expected to attend a garden party Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Joseph Stroock, 998 Fifth avenue, chairman of the women’s division of the Manhattan United Jewish Appeal Funds to fill the division’s $200,000 quota will be raised at the party.

James Wolfe, basso of the Metropolitan Opera Company, and Yasha Fishberg, violinist and conductor of the Brooklyn Symphony orchestra, will play at a concert tomorrow evening in the auditorium of Temple Ansche Chesed for the benefit of the United Jewish Appeal.
