Appeals and demonstrations for clemency spread throughout Palestine today in behalf of Shlomo Ben-Joseph, 22-year-old Zionist-Revisionist, sentenced to death by the Haifa Military Court for firing on an Arab bus and possessing arms, whose sentence was confirmed Friday by the commander of British troops in Palestine.
Although it was Sunday, High Commissioner Sir Harold A. MacMichael received Chief Rabbis Isaac Herzog and Joseph Zvi Dushinsky, and Rabbi Moshe Blau, leader of the Agudath Israel, who appealed for clemency for the condemned youth. The Agudath Israel cabled King George urging Royal intervention. Colonists demonstrated at Hadar Hacarmel, near Haifa, demanding commutation of the sentence, and also arms for self-defense against terrorism. The Polish Consul-General appealed to the High Commissioner for clemency for the south.
