Personalities, organizations, and Zionist parties in Israel and throughout the Jewish world have been pressing Jewish Agency and World Zionist Organization Chairman Louis Pincus to stay on at his post following rumors that he is considering leaving to take over as chairman of Bank Leumi. This was reported today by senior sources in the Agency.
The sources said that strong appeals had come from United Jewish Appeal circles in the US and Europe for Pincus to stay on. Jewish education movements such as ORT and the Joint Distribution Committee have made similar appeals.
The appeals are generally based on two grounds: Pincus was largely responsible for creating the enlarged Jewish Agency by bringing in the non-Zionist fund-raising bodies in 1971 and must not leave at this early stage of the enlarged unit; he has recently embarked on a number of Important projects which need his continued presence to see them through. Among these are the anti-ransom campaign and the concentration of world Jewish efforts in education under COJO.
Some sources say that if Pincus does decide to resign the chairmanship he will be persuaded to take on some other central role in the Zionist movement in addition to the Bank Leumi post; The position of president of the WZO. at present unfilled, is mentioned in this context.
