Lord Beaverbrook’s London Evening Standard tonight proposed the designation of Lord Samuel, Liberal Party leader in the House of Lords, as British Ambassador to the United States in succession to Sir Oliver Franks.

“At the age of 80,” the paper said in an editorial today, “Viscount Samuel is one of those men, rare in history, who become known and venerated as a statesman in more countries than his own.” It added that “as Ambassador to the United States, Lord Samuel would crown the services he has rendered to his country and to all progressive causes over a half century of public life.”
