The appointment of Mayer Levy, director of community relations of the Canadian Jewish Congress, to the Quebec Immigration Advisory Council was announced by the Minister of Immigration of Quebec, Jacques Couture, today. Levy, who immigrated to Canada from Egypt, was one of 15 citizens of the province named to the newly formed Council at the minister’s recommendation. Couture said he was confident that Levy “will bring an important contribution to the work of the Council for the benefit of all Quebecers.”
Under a recent agreement between the Canadian and Quebec governments, the province will have an important role in the selection of immigrants to Quebec and their integration into local society. Jewish immigrants, except those sponsored by HIAS which aids immigrants in need of special assistance, will be admitted to Quebec under a new law that gives priority to bilingual persons. The children of Jewish immigrants, including those sponsored by HIAS, will be required to study French as their principal language in compliance with Law 101 on education in the province.
