Under Secretary of State Walter Bedell Smith today told a graduating class at Washington and Jefferson College that “a beginning has been made toward lessening the friction between Israel and neighboring Arab states.” He did not elaborate on this statement.
Gen. Smith said that “in the Middle East, which certainly qualifies as a problem area, the recent trip made by Mr. Dulles gives us reason to think that there is a chance to make important progress toward essing the dangerous tensions that plague the region.”
