A solution to the delicate problem of how to bring the Arab League closer to the West and at the same time to utilize Israel’s maximum potentialities as a defensive partner in the Near East is being sought here in meetings of Secretary of State Dean Acheson and British Foreign Secretary Herbert Morrison, according to well-informed diplomatic sources. The meetings will be extended tomorrow to include French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman.
Although principal emphasis in the talks has been on Iran, an important second subject on the agenda has been the topic of guiding western policy toward a more concrete defensive arrangement, aimed against Communism, with the participation of both Israel and the Arabs. The current bilateral talks have included an examination of the continued refusal of Egypt to permit Israel-bound oil tankers through the Suez Canal and Egypt’s defiance of the United Nations on this issue. Arab obstructionism at the San Francisco conference was discussed, it was learned.
