The West German Government today indicated that it will assure the Arabs that it does not intend to grant credits to Israel or to establish diplomatic relations with Israel. A statement to this effect was made today by a Foreign Ministry spokesman in connection with the arrival of Abdel Khalek Hassouna, secretary-general of the Arab League for an official, two-week visit to Germany.
“We will be able to tell Mr. Hassouna quite clearly that establishment of diplomatic relations with Israel has not been planned; that Bonn is not considering granting of credits to Israel; and that the Federal Republic is not sending arms to Israel,” the spokesman said. The Bonn Government has arranged a series of high-level meetings for the Arab League leader with German officials in the political and economic fields.
(A group of British merchants and financiers have offered credits aggregating 20,000,000 pounds sterling ($56,000,000) to the United Arab Republic, according to Cairo dispatches received in London today. Under the agreement which, reportedly, has not as yet been completed, UAR firms would be able to place orders directly with British firms.)
