Evacuation by Arab Legion forces of an additional strip of territory in the so-called Arab triangle–from Urn el Fahm to Jatt–began early today and was expected to be completed by nightfall.
Oved Ben Ami, president of the Diamond Manufacturers Association of Israel, reported today on his return from London that the British diamond syndicate denied it was acting prejudicially toward the Israeli diamond-cutting industry. He said the London syndicate claimed it was treating all countries alike.
There is a temporary interruption in the supply of rough diamonds to the industry in Israel, Ben Ami explained, because the syndicate is following a policy of building confidence in the world diamond market and avoiding giving one country a local advantage over another. Ben Ami said representatives of the syndicate would soon visit Israel to Judge the needs and status of the industry at first-hand.
Maritime Day, celebrated today throughout Israel, marked the 13th anniversary of the founding of the port of Tel Aviv. Theme of the celebration was fostering of an attachment to the sea on the part of Israel’s youth. Chairman of the Israeli Knesset Joseph Sprinzak, Mayor Israel Rokach of Tel Aviv and other dignitaries took the salute from a special maritime parade.
