WRITING FROM NAPLES ON THE ARAB UNREST IN NORTHERN AFRICA, ANNE O’HARE MCCORMICK IN A DISPATCH TO THE NEW YORK TIMES TODAY COMPARES DISTURBANCES THERE WITH THOSE IN PALESTINE. SHE DECLARES:
“THE OUTBREAKS OF ARAB NATIONALISM ARE MORE LIKE A CONTAGION THAN A DIRECTED MOVEMENT. THEY INDICATE THAT THE AUTO INTOXICATIONS OF EUROPEAN NATIONS HAVE INFECTED THE NEIGHBORING CONTINENT.
“THE SITUATION IS GRAVE NEVERTHELESS, AND THE DISTURBANCES IN FRENCH TERRITORY THROW LIGHT ON DISTURBANCES ELSEWHERE. A BRIEF STOP-OVER AT A PORT LIKE ALGIERS REVEALS THAT THE AGITATION AMONG ARABS UNDER FRENCH RULE IS MORE WIDESPREAD AND HARDLY LESS VIOLENT THAN THAT IN PALESTINE.
“ARAB NATIONALISM TAKES THE FORM OF ANTI-ZIONISM IN THE HOLY LAND WHERE IT IS AGGRAVATED BY THE ENERGETIC COLONIZATION OF THE JEWS AND IS BROUGHT TO THE EXPLOSION POINT BY THE PROPOSAL OF PARTITION. BUT IT ALSO EXPLODES WHERE THERE IS NO JEWISH SETTLEMENT AND FLARES UP AGAINST THE FRENCH AS HOTLY AS AGAINST THE BRITISH OR THE ZIONISTS.”
