The number of Arab raiders and infiltrees from the neighboring states killed on Israel soil during patrol actions by Israel border units rose to 11 last week, in contrast to the one Arab infiltree killed the week before, a military spokesman revealed here today. This was seen here as additional proof of the Israel Government’s charges that the Jordan and Egyptian forces along Israel’s frontiers are provoking incident after incident in violation of the armistice pacts.
Meanwhile, United Nations truce observers here are greatly disturbed over the recent outbreaks and have sent a new SOS to their chief, Maj. Gen. William E. Riley, who is presently in New York. They are momentarily expecting instructions from him or word that he is flying out to take charge of the explosive situation.
Circles here familiar with Arab affairs are inclined to blame the recent increase in incidents along the Jordan borders on the fact that the Jordan Minister of Defense, Anwer Nusseibeh, and its chief delegate to the Mixed Armistice Commission, Azmi Nashashibi, are former Palestine Arabs who began their political careers in Palestine as proponents of anti-Jewish violence and seem unable to change their views and methods now that they represent a government. It is believed that they have instituted the current campaign in an attempt to provoke the Israelis into violent counteracts which could then be used to “prove” Israel “aggression.”
