A one-day Arab strike in sympathy with Syrian Nationalist uprisings succeeded today in partially halting normal activities throughout Palestine.
With police guards deployed in Arab centers no serious disorders were reported. An official Government statement said that the entire country was quiet except for a small demonstration of boys at Nablus.
During the strike at Nablus, demonstrators stoned the police station and broke windows. The police restored order.
In Jerusalem a special detail of police halted three attempts of students and school pupils to stage demonstrations. Members of the Arab Youth Federation, which played a leading role in the strike, forced many Arabs to close shops and join the strike. At Jaffa, police were stationed at the waterfront to guard the harbor. Normal activities were brought to a virtual standstill by the strike. The strike committee in that city issued a proclamation recalling the “heroism” of Arabs who rioted there recently. The proclamation asked solidarity with the Syrian Arabs.
