Representatives of Lebanon, Syria, the Sudan, Kuwait and Tanzania expressed their opposition in the General Assembly’s Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee today to the inclusion of the term “anti-Semitism” in the draft convention on the elimination of all forms of religious intolerance.
The representative of Lebanon said “the Zionist leaders around the world, by their actions and statements, are actually fomenting anti-Semitism.” The representative of Tanzania said his delegation was opposed to the singling out of one example of intolerance, particularly when the example was “contentious.” The representative of the Sudan said he deplored anti-Semitism but was opposed to the “unscrupulousness” of using international covenants for political ends.
