A monstrous suggestion, ascribed to Paul Knabenshue, United States Consul General, and promptly denied by him, was put forward in the Arab press.
The newspapers, quoting Consul Knabenshue, asserted that the Jewish population of Hebron arranged the murder of the Yeshiva students in order to evoke the sympathy of American Jewry.
Sixty-five Arabs are now imprisoned in Hebron, 32 were released for lack of evidence against them and 28 sentenced to from six months to a year each, according to the Arab press.
