The Turkish ex-Sultan and former Caliph Mehmed has cabled to King Hussein promising him his support for the Caliphate, according to reports in the Arab press.
An imposing ceremony took place yesterday, according to the Arab papers, at Shuna, in connection with the proclamation of King Hussein as Caliph. Large numbers of Arabs from Transjordania, Houran, Palestine and the Hedjas gathered at Shuna to participate in the celebration at which were present also hundreds of soldiers, priests, notables and Bedouins. It was noticed that there were no representatives of Syria participating. According to statements in the Arab press, France has exercised pressure on the Arab leaders in Syria to abstain from recognizing King Hussein as Caliph.
Nor is mention made in the press of the attendance of representatives from Mesopotamia. The relations between King Hussein and his son, Feisul, King of Mesopotamia, are said to be strained. Several of the Arab papers have been attacking King Feisul bitterly because he did not participate in the Amman conference.
Arab papers are publishing reports to the effect that negotiations are taking place for the establishment of a buffer state between Maan and Akaba, so as to separate the Hedjas from the domain of the Wahabis tribe in order to avoid a new outbreak of hostilities.
