Arabs Continue Attacks on Jewish Positions; Capture Hills; Fire Upon U.N. Observers

Arabs today continued to attack Jewish positions, especially in the Latrun area and on the southern front, it was officially reported Jan Israeli military spokesman.

U.N. MEDIATOR ORDERS ISRAEL TO READMIT 8,000 ARABS AND REBUILD THEIR HOMES

U.N. mediator Count Folke Bernadotte today ordered the Israeli Government to restore three Arab townships destroyed during an alleged truce violation and readmit come 8,000 Arabs who fled the towns. The villages Ein Ghazal, Ijzim and Jaba — will lie south of Haifa athwart the Haifa-Tel Aviv main highway.

The villages-were brought under Israeli attack on July 18, at the beginning the second truce, Bernadotte said. He insisted that the attack and the destruction could not be excused by the avowed desire to make the Haifa-Tel Aviv highway safe because fighting between villagers and Israelis occurred before months the Arabs, in these towns had sniped at and ambushed Jewish traffic along the coastal road.

Ordering the Israelis to rebuild the homes of the 8,000 Arabs whom U.N. investigators found living in refugee camps in the Jenin area, Bernadotte said: “I am strongly of the opinion that the measures taken involving the systematic both of the spirit and letter of the terms of the truce.” The Security Council was informed of the mediator’s findings and action.

A report emanating from British sources in Haifa that the Mosul-Haifa pipeline has been damaged was denied today by the Israeli press. The newspaper also darned their readers against taking British reports at face value.
