Arab delegates to a meeting of the Communist-dominated World Peace Council failed today in their effort to win adoption of an anti-Israel resolution.
The Arabs assailed Israel and were supported by Cheng-Chi, a Chinese Communist delegate who earlier this month attended a meeting in the Gaza Strip. The Chinese delegate, in his address, cited a clause from a “Gaza Declaration” to the effect that Israel was “a typical imperialist country.” However, the Soviet and East European delegates stayed out of this portion of the debate.
Eliezer Halevy of Achdut Avodah and Yaacov Majus of Mapam, two of the Israeli delegates, stressed Israel’s goal of a peaceful settlement with the Arab countries. They expressed regret over the Arab refugee problem, which they called a heritage of the 1948 war and deplored Arab refusal to negotiate peace with Israel. Tewfik Toubi, an Arab Communist member of the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, also was a member of the Israeli delegation.
