Curfew was proclaimed in the Old City of Jerusalem tonight following the slaying by Arabs of two Jews, bringing the Jewish death toll since April 19 to twenty-four. Jews are evacuating that section of the city in fear of further attacks.
The two latest victims of Arab attacks, Alter Cohen, 67, and Reuben Klapholtz, 45, were given secret burial at different hours of the evening and night.
Hebrew newspapers, reporting the deaths, ask High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope where the security is that has been promised.
Earlier, the slaying of one Arab and wounding of another by Arabs was reported.
An Arab watchman employed by Jews was shot dead near Motza for refusing to join the general strike against Jewish immigration, now in its fourth week. Another Arab was stabbed and seriously wounded in Jerusalem for buying shoes from a Jewish-owned store.
A bomb was hurled in front of a police station in the Old City without doing any damage. An Arab car was set on fire at the Damascus Gate.
Police raided an Arab Youth club, believed to be the headquarters for terrorists conducting the anti-Jewish campaign of arson and violence, arresting two persons found on the premises.
A crowd of 6,000 Arabs staged a demonstration in Jaffa, shouting, “kill the Jews.” It took police an hour and a half to disperse the mob. Soldiers were reported patrolling the streets of the city to prevent disturbances.
A Jewish stocking factory in a Jaffa suburb was bombed. The home of Haifa’s vice-mayor, Shabbetai Levy, a Jew, was set on fire. The blaze was quickly extinguished.
An official communique reported today that a Jewish-owned bus was stoned at Rehoboth and that another was shot at near Ramleh. A bomb exploded in front of the District Commissioner’s home at Haifa without doing damage.
Touring Haifa and Acre, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin el Husseini, was reported to be making inflammatory speeches in which he alleges that Jews are killing Arabs.
Fires last night destroyed forty dunams of wheat at Yazur, several dunams at Hedera and razed ten tons of barley at Zichron Jacob.
A joint delegation representing the Jewish National Council, the Jewish Farmers’ Association, and the Agudath Israel, extreme orthodox organization, was to appeal today to the High Commissioner for security and against halting of Jewish immigration.
