Several Arabs remained in custody today in connection with the stabbing yesterday evening near the Damascus Gate of a 60-year-old Israeli Jew, Ovadia Baruchi, a resident of the Bukharan Quarter of Jerusalem.
Baruchi was today reportedly recovering from the operation he underwent to pull out the knife lodged in his back by his attackers. The knife is said to have missed by only a few centimeters the victim’s heart, and he is now out of danger.
Baruchi was attacked by a knife-wielding assailant as he stepped out of a shop in this busy part of East Jerusalem. The assailant disappeared into the crowd and ran into the Old City. Baruchi was rushed by a passerby to the hospital, with the knife still lodged in his back. Jerusalem police chief Superintendent Haim Albaldess noted that the Damascus Gate area was a busy commercial center where Jewish shoppers and Arab shopkeepers had generally conducted their business peaceably.
