The Arab states are recruiting former German Army specialists in West German cities for their military forces, it was reported today, About 12,000 Germans are said to have been recruited to date. They are purportedly serving as instructors in the armies of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria.
According to reports here, the Germans receive from 200 to 500 Deutschemarks when they sign up for service with the Arab armies. Leading the German recruitment drive is “Hassim Bey,” who is really Col. Hans Muller, who saw action in the Nazi Afrika Corps. Although recruiting Germans for foreign military service is not illegal here, the Hamburg police deny that the recruiters are agents of the Arab states.
