The Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the Anglican Church in Britain, and J.S. Whale, Moderator of the Free Churches, today issued a joint statement urging special prayers for the Jews in all churches in England on the first Sunday of the new year.
Expressing their “bitter grief that our nation can do so little to help,” the two churchmen state that “short of victory there is no way in which we can effect anything comparable to the need and the massacre which go on from day to day. We should be united in constant prayer to the Almighty that this monstrous evil may be checked and the Jews delivered from their tormentors,” the statement concludes.
Meanwhile, Liberal circles in Britain continue to press their demands that the British Government take definite steps to implement the recent Allied declaration which condemned the persecution of Europe’s Jews and promised retribution for their persecutors. Especial emphasis is laid on action by the British Government to ease the immigration barriers which hinder the rescue of those few Jews who are able to flee Nazi-dominated countries.
