The Archbishop of Canterbury today headed a list of prominent British Christian church leaders who greeted the Anglo-Jewish community on the occasion of the tercentenary of the return of the Jews to England. The Archbishop’s greetings and those of the other church leaders, including the Moderator of the Free Church Federal Council, which encompasses 23,000 churches in England and Wales, and the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, were published in “Common Ground,” publication of the Council of Christians and Jews.
The Archbishop hailed the “association of the Jew and the English” as having brought great benefits to both, but warned that the danger of anti-Semitism “still lurks” ready to strike at the first opportunity. At the same time, he called attention to the existence of the Council of Christians and Jews to ward off such danger and to reaffirm the positive religious values of both faiths.
