Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan of Atlanta vigorously denounced the anti-Zionist draft as “not in accord with the facts” and “productive of much harm.” He related it to anti-Semitism which, he declared, “is evil and should be denounced and repudiated wherever it rears its head.”
The Roman Catholic leader, who heads the Archdiocese of Atlanta, made that statement at a two-day Vatican II Commemorative Conference here co-sponsored by the American Jewish Committee and the Archdiocese, He said:
“I would like to take this occasion to give public expression to my regret at the recent actions of the UN full membership committee in recommending to the General Assembly that it determine that Zionism is a form of racism and social discrimination. Such a resolution is not in accord with the facts and is productive of much harm. I am proud that the U.S. delegation denounced this as an anti-Semitic and obscene action and warned that the resolution places the work of the UN in jeopardy.”
