The Cabinet approved today the appointment of Likud Knesset member Moshe Arens as Israel’s next Ambassador to the United States. The appointment will receive final ratification after its approval by the United States government. Israel’s present Ambassador to the U.S. is Ephraim Evron.
Arens will be replaced in the Knesset by Michael Kleiner of the Herut faction. Kleiner, a former chairman of the Tel Aviv University’s student union, is presently the director general of the World Zionist Organization’s education and culture department.
The favorite candidate to replace Arens as chairman of the powerful Knesset Security and Foreign Affairs Committee is Dr. Eliahu Ben Elissar, the former director general of the Prime Minister’s office and the first Ambassador to Egypt.
