The decision of the Israel Chief Rabbinate to declare non-kosher a shipment of 3,000 tons of Argentine beef has caused consternation and indignation in Jewish circles here and has received wide publicity, even in the non-Jewish press.
It is considered possible here that the Chief Rabbinate’s action may result in cutting off meat shipments to Israel from this country. In a front page editorial, Di Yiddishe Zeitung says today that the decision of the Chief Rabbinate has caused “general disgust and bitterness” in the Jewish community of Argentina, is a blow to Israel’s prestige and is “putting us in a delicate situation.” The editorial charges that what is at stake in the affair is “not kashruth” but “the ambitions and caprices of the rabbinate.”
