In an extraordinary meeting of the DAIA–central body of Argentine Jewry representing all Jewish groups in the country–reports on the proposed reparations talks between Israel and Germany were debated amid heated discussions concerning the propriety of such negotiations.
Although most speakers at the meeting agreed on the justice of Israel’s demands for reparations, they condemned direct Israel negotiations with Germany as “shameful and unrealistic.” The speakers cited the “feeble majority” obtained by Prime Minister David Ben Gurion in the Knesset, approving Israel-Germany reparations negotiations. A final resolution is expected to be forthcoming at the next session.
