Representatives of major Jewish immigration agencies were assured today by two key Argentine Government officials that Argentina was taking steps to liberalize immigration policies in connection with World Refugee Year.
The assurances were given by Alfredo Vitolo, Argentine Foreign Minister, and A. Ciapustio, Director of Immigration, during a stopover here. They met with Harold Traube, United Hias Service director, Sydney Nelson, representative of the Joint Distribution Committee and Zachariah Shuster, European director of the American Jewish Committee.
One of the questions discussed was the fact that Jewish refugees hoping to migrate to Argentina have frequently been unable to furnish documents required by Argentine authorities because the documents were destroyed during World War II, or because they have lacked professional skills required by Argentina. The two officials lauded the record of the Argentine Jewish community in supporting Jewish newcomers and said that new regulations would help to solve the problems discussed.
