Ariel Sharon may unilaterally annex some West Bank Jewish settlements, an Israeli newspaper reported. Ma’ariv reported last Friday that the Israeli prime minister also might dismantle Gaza settlements. Settlements under consideration for annexation included Ma’aleh Adumim, east of Jerusalem, and the Etzion bloc, south of Jerusalem. Both areas would have remained Israeli under earlier peace plans, but in exchange for swathes of Israeli land. Sharon has said he is contemplating unilateral steps, and has warned Palestinians that they would be better off negotiating an agreement.
