Fifteen armed men held up the Discount Bank in the center of Tel Aviv today and escaped with $80,000. A clerk was seriously wounded when he attempted to resist. After warning the staff and other persons in the bank not to make an outery, the robbers escaped in waiting taxis.
Earlier, the government announced that a number of leading “Jewish terrorists” had been arrested during searches by police and troops in recent days. An unconfirmed report said that among them were serveral important members of the Irgun, who were captured last Thursday.
Several Hebrew newspapers today published a list of the extremists wanted by the police, headed by Manachem Beigin, commander of the Irgun, but did not publish their picture, as had been requested by the authorities.
The Palestine High Court today rejected an appeal by attorneys for these doomed Irgunists captured trying to run a readblock after several British solders had been flogged. The lawyers had asked permission to appeal to the Privy Council against a ruling by the High Court rejecting their reguest for an order directing Gen. MacMillan to show cause why the three should be executed.
