The secret marriage of Max Aussschnitt, a Jewish industrialist, and Livia Pordean, daughter of the vice-president of the Rumanian Senate, has been reported here from Tinisoara, a Rumanian town. The report has created a sensation.
The couple’s marriage was performed in secret because of threats of the anti-Semitic Iron Guard organization that it would not permit a Jew to marry a Rumanian girl. The ceremony took place in the private chapel of the Roman Catholic Bishop Dr. Pasha in Tinissoara.
The wedding is considered an important event in the life of Rumanian society. Two Cabinet Ministers appeared at the ceremony as witnesses. Mr. Ausschnitt is the greatest power in Rumania’s armament, mining and metal industries. He is a widower of forty-six, with a boy of ten. Miss Pordean, who is one of the richest girls in the country, is twenty-two years old. (He is not to be confused with another Max Ausschnitt, also an industrialist of note, who is a member of the Jewish Agency for Palestine.)
