U.S. Army authorities yesterday barred the Hungarian-language newspaper “Szabad Magyarsag”–which was denounced by the American Jewish Committee as “flagrantly pro-Nazi”–from Camp Kilmer where it was distributed among refugees from Hungary, it was announced here today.
An investigation of the AJC charges was conducted by Leo C. Beebe of the President’s Committee for Hungarian Refugee Relief, who is in charge of the refugee program at Camp Kilmer, and Brig, Gen. Sidnay Wooten, the post commander. Mr. Beebe subsequently issued a statement that no distribution would be made of “anything that all the government and voluntary agencies participating in the Hungarian refugee relief program do not feel is beneficial to the refugees and the resettlement program.”
Mr. Beebe explained the banning action with the comment that “This paper is not barred because of its contents but only because a request for its distribution has not been presented and the possibility of its distribution has not been considered.”
