“The Army is trying to do a humane job for the displaced persons in Germany, but is confronted with an impossible situation,” Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, former chairman of the Army and Navy Religious Activities committee of the Jewish Welfare Board, said here today following his return from a tour of England, France and Germany.
Dr. Bernstein, who went to England to participate in the United Palestine Appeal campaign there, declared that the Army was providing food and sufficient housing to maintain the DP’s, but that the Army was not “equipped by training or function to deal sympathetically and effectively” with psychological and spiritual problems confronting the displaced persons. He cited the recent Stuttgart raid by German policeman in which one Jew was killed and four wounded as evidence of such shortcomings.
