A number of local Jewish merchants are under arrest and facing a conspiracy trial on charges brought against them by the Gepu, Soviet secret police.
The merchants are charged with having entered into a conspiracy with employees of the Central Labor Cooperative, from whom they are alleged to have received large quantities of flour, soap and textile products for speculation purposes. The secret police charge that they sold the products only in exchange for Czaristic gold coin which they kept hidden in their phylacteries boxes. The Gepu further claims that it has discovered seven secret warehouses where the products were stored.
