Arrival of Refugees from Lisson Spurs Palestine to Ask for More Jews from Europe

The arrival here of 742 Jewish refugees from Central and western Europe on the Nyassa is the subject of articles today in the Palestine press pointing out that this is the first large group of Jews to reach Palestine press pointing out that this is the first large group of Jews to reach Palestine from Europe during the last three years, and expressing the hope that other large transports will follow. The Nyassa, a Portuguese ship, landed here flying the Portuguese and the Blue-White flags. It was greeted by crowds singing Hatikvah.

David J. Schweithzer, special envoy of the Hias-Ica Emigration Association, speaking to representatives of the press disclosed that three marriages took place aboard the ship during the voyage. He reported that hundreds of Jewish refugees who remained in Lisbon wept when the ship sailed from there. He urged that Jewish organizations in Palestine endeavor to bring them to Palestine immediately. He reported that of the 742 Jews who came on the Nyassa more than 100 were children, one third were women and the remainder were all young men including people who fled from Nazi concentration camps.
