With a special session of the Illinois State Assembly assured for next month to consider various revenue and relief problems, a number of Chicago Jews are seeking to prevail upon Gov. Louis L. Emmerson to include in the call for the special session a change in the registration dates for this Fall.
It is pointed out that the first registration date, October 1, falls on the first day of Rosh Hashonah and that the orthodox citizens of Chicago will not register. That leaves only one other registration day for them, October 11. Jewish leaders declare that it is not fair to the Jewish voter to deprive him of the chance to have two days in which to register, therefore it is asked that the state assembly provide another registration day in place of the original date of October 1. It is called to Gov. Emmerson’s attention that when a similar situation arose in Maryland four years ago, Gov. Albert C. Ritchie appreciated the importance of the matter and the election laws were amended.
Rabbi Morris Goldstein, recently returned from Liverpool to the United States, has accepted an invitation to officiate at Temple Sherith Israel of San Francisco during the coming high holy days. The pulpit of Temple Israel was vacated several months ago by the resignation of Rabbi Jacob Weinstein because of illness.
The entire membership of the Hadassah in Yonkers, 275 in all, will attend the convention in New York City this month, according to Mrs. Albert Levy, president.
