The Massachusetts State Supreme Judicial Court was asked yesterday to require a town school committee to halt Bible reading and prayer in its schools.
The application was made by Attorney General Edward W. Brooke against the North Brookfield School Committee. Justice Jacob J. Spiegal set December 4 for a hearing. The school committee of North Brookfield, a town of 2,600, voted five to two on November 18 to reaffirm a decision to continue the sectarian practices as the only community in Massachusetts refusing to accept a U.S. Supreme Court ban against such practices in public schools.
