George Lansbury, leader of the Labor Party, yesterday telegraphed to Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz, together with the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury asking them, in the name of religion, to join together and intervene and mediate in the “senseless” dispute on arbitration between Great Britain and Ireland.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency learns that the Chief Rabbi will not, in all likelihood, act upon this request inasmuch as he considers political activities of such a nature outside the scope of his activities.
Some amusement was caused by Mr. Lansbury’s appeal to the Chief Rabbi which called for the “application of Christian principles which alone can save both people from sheer barbarism.”
