Assailants Not Jews, Arlosoroff Believed; Palestine Aroused; One Arrest Made

One man is under arrest in connection with the assassination Friday night in Tel Aviv, of Dr. Chaim Arlosoroff, noted Zionist leader, according to an official police communique tonight. The arrested man is being held for hearing before the police magistrate. His identity and nationality were not disclosed.

The murderers of Dr. Chaim Arlosoroff, noted young Zionist leader, who was assassinated in Tel Aviv Friday evening, were not Jews, Dr. Arlosoroff believed, according to close friends who were with him when he died, two hours after the attack, in Hadassah Hospital, Tel Aviv. His attackers were not known to Dr. Arlosoroff personally, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency is informed, but he was reasonably certain that they were not Jews.

Several arrests for questioning have been made in the case, both of Arabs and Jews, but all suspects thus far have been released after establishing their innocence.

Public agitation and consternation over the case is growing daily and has reached a state unparalleled here in recent years as all sections of the population concern themselves with a flood of speculative comment on motives for the crime and the identity of its perpetrators.

PRESS CRITICAL

The Hebrew press caustically criticizes the police who, it stresses, have frequently failed to prevent such murders. The least they can do now, the general tenor of the press comments, is to discover the assassins.

No information regarding the police search has been made public. While, it is reported, Dr. Arlosoroff died without being able to identify his slayers, Mrs. Arlosoroff, who was with him when he was attacked, is said to have given the police a complete description of the two strangers who accosted them and shot her husband.

In a joint statement issued by the General Zionists, the Revisionist group, the Mizrachi and the Colonists Association, expressing sympathy with the labor party at the loss of their leader, blame for the crime was put upon those opposed to the establishment of the Jewish national home in Palestine.

“The murder was committed with the purpose to disturb the Jewish work of upbuilding,” says the statement. “But Jewry will redouble its efforts to rebuild the Fatherland, which will be the best memorial to Dr. Alosoroff.”

The Central Revisionist committee, in a statement last night, declared that Dr. Arlosoroff’s murder was one of the series committed for political purposes in Yadjur, Balfouria and Nahalal. It urges the Government to take drastic steps to uproot the group perpetrating these terroristic attacks.

The political department of the Palestine executive of the Jewish Agency has been taken over by Dr. M. Hexter, American member of the executive, and Heschel Farbstein, of Warsaw, member of the Jewish Agency executive, who delayed his return to Poland.
