A full-scale General Assembly debate on the purposes, functions, deployment and continuance of the United Nations Emergency Force which is stationed on the Israel-Egyptian front, was seen as virtually assured today when it was announced that May. Gen. E. L. M, Burns, commander of UNE, will arrive here tomorrow. The debate on UNE is scheduled to begin before a plenary session of the Assembly by the end of this week.
Under a resolution introduced late yesterday by 20 member states, UNE would be continued at least through 1958. The resolution would authorize the Secretary General to expend on behalf of UNE an additional $13, 500, 000 for the period ending December 1957 and for the continuing operation of the Force beyond that date to a maximum of $25, 000, 000. Canada is among the 20 sponsoring members, but not the United States Britain or France. However, their lack of sponsorship does not indicate they with oppose the draft.
